Q : What is wajib and mustahab? Click to view answer
A :
Wajib means compulsory; any ruling that you have to do or follow. For example, performing Salat (prayer) 5 times a day is Wajib for a Muslim, or fasting in the holy month of Ramadan, etc. See: Practical Principles

But when doing something is Mustahab, it is recommended not obligatory. In other words, it is good if you do it. For instance, fasting on particular days during the year is Mustahab, or some prayers, etc.

Q :
Should Muslim American men be permitted to marry up to four wives since our religion Islam permits us to do so?

A :
No, they shouldn’t! There are two viewpoints about polygamy among Muslim scholars. Some deny it as a general Islamic law, saying that it was suited to that specific time -i.e. the time and occasion in which the verse (4:3) was revealed. The others, on the other hand, make any attempt to defend this law by reasoning it. see: Why does Islam allow polygamy? Part 1

According to the article above, polygamy in Islam is a remedy for a social problem (when there is the excess number of marriageable women over marriageable men); it is NOT an obligation, necessity or even a general suggestion!

What’s more, it is only allowed under certain conditions, one of which is being Fair towards them, Quran says: "But if you fear that you may not treat them [your wives] fairly, then [marry only] one" (4:3)

Being fair between the wives is so important and unlikely to be observed by most of men that God says in another verse: "you will not be able to be fair between wives, even if you are eager to do so..." (4:129) Also see Why does Islam allow polygamy? Part 2

So, in a nutshell, the best form of marriage in the eyes of Islam is monogamy; then you’d better “marry only one” (4:3)
