765 A.D Was born in Medina to Imam Musa al-Kazim (AS) and Tuktam.
799 A.D His father was martyred in prison in Baghdad.
799 A.D the period of his leadership (Imamate) over Muslims started, which lasted through the ruling of three Abbasid Caliphs, including Harun al-Rashid, Muhammad al-Amin, and al-Ma'mun.
811 A.D His son, Imam Muhammad b.'Ali al-Jawad (AS), was born tohim and his wife,Sabika.
816 A.D Due to political reasons, al-Ma'mun offered his throne to him, which Imam seriously rejected. Then, the Caliph asked him to be his successor, which Imam refused at first, but was made to accept under al-Ma'mun's threat to kill him.
817 A.D Was asked by al-Ma'mun to lead the Eid al-Fitr prayer; although fisrt declined, he finally accepted on al- Ma'mun's insisting. people expected Imam al-Ridha to exit his house to lead the prayer in the special manner of Caliphs, but surprisingly saw that he came out bare-footed, reciting Takbir. To avoid people's attraction to Imam and avert the imminent rebelion, al-Ma'mun sent a person and kept Imam from performing the prayer.
816-819 A.D Held many scientific meetings attended by scholars from other religions and sects about ideological and jurisprudential issues.
819 A.D Was martyred in Tus (near Mashhad,Iran) by a poison fruit given to him by order of al-Ma'mun.
