659 A.D He was born in Medina to Imam Hussain (AS) and Shahrbanu.
677 A.D His first son Muhammad ibn Ali (Imam Baqir (AS)) was born.
680 A.D He attended the battle of Karbala along with his father, Imam Hussain (AS), but he did not participate in the fight due to severe sickness.
680 A.D His father was martyred in the battle of Karbala.

680 A.D He was captivated by Yazid's army after the battle of Karbala and taken to Kufa and later to Damascus, along with lady Zainab (AS) and the ones who remain from Imam Hussain's (AS) family.

Hw was known as the best of worshipers (Zayn al-Abidin) due to his sincere prayers and supplications which later compiled as Al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya.
He also possessed a profound wisdom which despite severe pressure of the ruler of his time, tried to pass it to his apostles. the legacy of this deep knowledge can be found in his Treatise of Rights (Risalat al-huquq) which is a social and personal treatise for a more conscious and meaningful life.
713 A.D He was poisoned and martyred by the order of al-Walid b.' Abd al-Malik.
